How to Buy a Diamond
Here are some pointers to help you in your search. You may wish to bookmark this page for easy reference.
First of all, MAKE IT FUN! You may even what to come along on one of our Diamond Buying Expeditions. This is a stone that you will enjoy for many years to come, so why not enjoy the process of finding it.

Learn as much as possible about diamonds. Visit my pages on Cut, Carat Weight, Clarity, Color, and etc. Visit some of the educational sights on my fun places to visit page. You can spend as much time, or as little, as you wish learning about the stone that you are looking for. Then you can start looking at actual stones safe in the knowledge that you will have the basics that you need to learn more when you actually see the stones.

Once you have decided what it is that you want to look for, then go shopping. Compare price, service, and quality at your local jewelers and on the internet. Narrow your search down to two or three items.

Before you call me, you may want to check out my references. Call the Better Business Bureau in Pittsburgh, at (412)456-2700. Call the BBB in your own area, to check the records of your local jewelers.

When you are comfortable with my reputation, email us or call me at (814)793-4479 and ask me to give you a quote on an item that you like. If possible, have your "best price" from my competitors available, but don't tell it to me. Tell me the size, color, clarity of the diamond you are looking at, and I will tell you my price. Or, tell me what you want to spend, and ask me how big a stone you can get for that kind of money.

When making comparisons, remember to take into consideration the service and guarantee. Can you get your money back, cheerfully, for 30 days, for any reason? Is this important to you?

If it is, please remember that at The Prospector Jewelers, your satisfaction is guaranteed. I will cheerfully refund every penny that you have spent with me if you are unhappy for any reason.

Remember! This is supposed to be fun! Learn as much, or as little, as you wish, but keep it fun. I am amazed at the number of people who get so wrapped up in the numbers on a certificate, that they forget the original intention was to get a beautiful diamond. Find a jeweler you can trust, whether it be me or another, to guide you to a suitable stone. We live on your referrals and repeat business, that is why we offer such a generous guarantee.

Enjoy your search! We look forward to hearing from you.

Remember, for questions, please contact us.

Anatomy of a GIA Gem Trade Laboratory Diamond Grading Report

The GIA Gem Trade Laboratory maintains its independence by refraining from any involvement in the buying, selling or appraising of gems and jewelry. A Diamond Grading Report written by the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory or one of its affiliates describes a diamond's weight, proportions, finish, color grade, and clarity grade. No valuation is stated.
Whenever you buy a diamond, request that it be accompanied by a GIA Gem Trade Laboratory Diamond Grading Report. Ensure that your diamond has been graded by the pioneers of the most widely accepted and internationally recognized Diamond Grading System, with the utmost impartiality and integrity.

The GIA Gem Trade Laboratory Diamond Grading Report has become the benchmark for the international gem and jewelry industry. Appropriately, the language developed and taught by GIA provides a universal way of communicating the quality of a diamond, regardless of geographic location. Today, the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory issues diamond grading reports on the majority of high quality diamonds over one carat in size. It examines most of the world's important stones, including the famous Hope Diamond. And because its only affiliation is with the world's foremost nonprofit educational organization for the gem and jewelry industry, you can trust GIA GTL to provide you with an independent, objective opinion regarding the quality of your diamond.
Throughout its 67-year history, the Institute has maintained a strict ethics policy and holds itself to this code, which has protected and enhanced its reputation throughout the decades. In effect, GIA cannot and does not compete with the gem and jewelry trade, which allows it to fulfill its nonprofit mission and effectively serve the public at large.
