May 2010 Newsletter - A Diamond-Studded Edition

International Jewelry Show

The Prospector Jewelers will be closed Friday, June 4th through Thursday, June 10th to attend our 15th annual International Jewelry Show. This is our opportunity to replenish our inventory and get a hedge on viewing the newest designs and products. This in turn enables us to serve you better.

We will reopen Friday, June 11th for your jewelry needs.

While this is the leading event in the United States serving the fine jewelry market, we also find it to be a forum where industry professionals gather to showcase the latest creations, introduce new products, and network together.

In addition to purchasing the latest designs & gemstones for our store, we also serve as a broker for some of our customers, finding the perfect diamond or gemstone for them. This can be your decision to choose the size, shape, and variety of gemstone you wish--not just accept what is available on the current market. It's the journey of your special gemstone--from the earth, to the cutter, to you--no previous owner or stops along the way.

Call (814-793-4479) us or email today for any requests and experience The Prospector Difference.

Diamonds! Incredible facts about Earth's top gemstone

In 2004, astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics discovered a diamond star of crystallized carbon that is 10-BILLION-TRILLION-TRILLION CARATS!

The temperature at which DIAMOND BEGINS TO BURN is 1,290 º F

Batswana's Jwaneng Mine is the world's most productive mine, normally producing about 35 MILLION CARATS EACH YEAR.

THE 35.56 CT. WITTELSBACH BLUE, a deep blue stone with royal provenance, is the world's most expensive jewel.  In December 2008 it sold for over $24 MILLION. The buyer, London mega-jeweler Laurence Graff, recut the diamond, LOSING FOUR CARATS but IMPROVING THE COLOR TO A TRUER SHADE OF BLUE.

In 1905, the largest documented diamond ever discovered - 3,106 CARATS was unearthed in the Premier (now Cullinan) Mind in South Africa shortly after it opened in 1905. THE CULLINAN 1, is the centerpiece of the Crown Jewels of Britain.

Diamonds, while generally clear and colorless, are actually found in all colors. THE RAREST DIAMOND COLOR IS RED, of which there are only a handful of known specimens.

Diamonds from the Letseng Mine in the African nation of Lesotho are on average the world's most valuable; AVERAGING $1,200 TO $1,700 PER CARAT, against an average of $70 per carat for most other mines.

One of many designers we feature,  GelinAbaci is a company that grew out of a concept held by Gabriel Gelin and Sam Abaci. Together they have a combined total of more than 50 years in the jewelry industry.

Since its inception, GelinAbaci has made a name in the industry as the premier designer of Tension Jewelry in the United States. In keeping with the ever-changing desires of consumers, they continue to add more unique styles to their popular Tension Collection and Amoré Wedding Band Collection.

The origin Of Diamond Cutting

No one knows exactly when, where and who made the first attempt to cut diamonds. It is assumed that the first diamond cutting styles originated from India. However, it was only limited to chipping or grinding. Moreover in ancient times diamonds were valued more for their magical and mythological properties. By modifying the natural state of a diamond in any way would alter it's magical properties and render it useless. At the most the cleaving techniques of diamond were attempted to get flat faces on diamonds. It is believed that the early diamond cutting styles originated in Europe. The European travelers visiting India for it's diamond treasures used to transport diamonds from the Golconda Mine to Europe for cutting.

The Old Mine Cut

Early diamond cutters were unable to polish the rough octahedral diamonds. However, they found out that they could polish or grind diamonds into a point by polishing almost parallel to the diamonds rough faces, at an angle lesser than the diamond rough faces. They also realized that only diamonds cut diamonds, which is why they used a wooden table covered with diamond dust to achieve any kind of polishing.

Trivia Question about "Diamonds in the Movies": Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Pink Panther, Diamonds are Forever, Blood Diamond, To Catch A Thief and A Fish Called Wanda all have Diamonds in common. In which more recent Kevin Kline film do diamonds play a role?
